The Little Truck That Could: A Donation That Keeps Giving

Some vehicles are more than just a way to get from point A to point B—they become tools for service, symbols of care, and extensions of a person’s commitment to community. That’s exactly the case with a 1997 Ford Ranger Splash Supercab donated to Habitat South Sarasota through Habitat for Humanity’s Cars for Homes program by Evelyn J.

The truck originally belonged to Evelyn J.’s next-door neighbor and sat unused for months. Having owned several Ford Rangers over the years, Evelyn J. felt compelled to step in and give the truck some much-needed attention. She invested time and resources to bring it back to life, including new tires, a topper, a battery, serviced air conditioning, new bed bolts, and new headlamps.

While the truck was initially intended for a family member, plans changed—and Evelyn J. found a new purpose for it herself. Throughout the spring and summer, she used the Ranger for environmental cleanups across Manatee and Sarasota Counties, hauling more than 1,000 pounds of debris removed from coastal waters. The truck quickly earned its nickname: “the little truck that could.”

After purchasing a small trailer to continue her cleanup work, Evelyn J. realized she no longer needed the Ranger—but she wanted to make sure it continued serving the community. A longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteer, she knew exactly where it could do the most good.

By donating the truck through the Cars for Homes program, Evelyn J. ensured its impact would live on. Proceeds from the donation will directly support Habitat South Sarasota’s mission to build safe, affordable housing and help local families achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

We are deeply grateful to Evelyn J. for her generosity, her service, and her belief that even a small truck can make a big difference. Her donation is a powerful reminder that when we care for what we have—and choose to give it forward—we help build stronger communities for everyone.
