The Joy of Giving Back

Mark Stoker, Volunteer since 2020

Since 2020, Mark Stoker has been a dedicated construction volunteer with Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County. For Mark, volunteering isn't just about swinging a hammer or measuring lumber—it’s about making a lasting difference in the lives of local families and experiencing the joy of giving back.

“What I enjoy about Habitat for Humanity is the feeling of giving back to others,” Mark shares. “It's rewarding to meet the future homeowners and to see their emotion and excitement when the home is finished.”

That human connection is at the heart of what keeps Mark coming back to the job site. Watching a family step into their new home for the first time—filled with gratitude, relief, and hope—is a moment that sticks with him every time. It’s a reminder that each hour of labor contributes to something far bigger than a building. It's a foundation for someone’s future.

Mark also credits the Habitat staff with making the volunteer experience one to look forward to.

“The group of Habitat staff also makes the volunteering experience a fun and low-stress environment,” he says. “They’re knowledgeable, encouraging, and great to work with.”

While every stage of the build has its rewards, Mark’s favorite part of the construction process is framing the interior walls. It’s the moment when a house begins to take on its identity.

“The vision of the home and rooms really starts to come together then,” he explains. “You can finally see the layout—the bedrooms, the kitchen, the spaces that will soon be filled with laughter, conversations, and memories.”

Mark’s commitment and passion are just one example of the incredible impact our volunteers make every day. Thanks to people like him, families in our community are able to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.
