Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County, Inc.’s (HSSC) A Brush with Kindness Program (ABWK) is an exterior home painting service that offers pressure washing and painting for income qualified homeowners in need.  It is our intent to help our most vulnerable population revitalize their homes with pride and dignity. ABWK serves as a companion to our core building services, enabling our organization to serve more families and increase opportunities for volunteers and sponsors.

Program Details

  • Homeowner’s insurance and property taxes must be paid up-to-date

  • Homeowner’s mortgage must be paid up-to-date

  • Note - There is a $200 program fee to be paid by homeowner.

Total gross household income for all residents over age 18 must not exceed 80% of the median household income for Sarasota County to be eligible. Homeowners that are physically able and their family members are expected to work alongside Habitat volunteers while the work is being done.

HSSC will review the scope of work, painting colors, and preparation needed with the homeowner for their approval before the work begins. As a condition of approval, the homeowner will be required to provide a signed photo release. Photos of the home (both before and after) will be taken so HSSC can promote the program. The homeowner would also be required to pay $200 to have their house painted, which would be collected up front to reserve their position on the painting calendar.

Example of Services Available

Painting: power washing, caulking and painting

Repair: Minor repair of trim, soffit, and fascia in preparation for painting only.

How Does Program Work

Application is to be completed by the homeowner. The Family Services Director reviews all applications and meets with qualified applicants. An HSSC construction department staff member will make a site visit and prepare a scope of work and review with the homeowner.  HSSC will use volunteer labor and donated materials (when they can) to keep costs low.  HSSC will seek donor(s) to help fund the materials and staff overhead above what the homeowner contributes.
