Garden Park Ground Breaking

The land for Garden Park, Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County, Inc. affordable housing neighborhood, was purchased in 2007 from the Blackburn Cove Condominiums Developers.  Located in Nokomis, the land was perfect for development due to its great location and zoning already in place.  To help satisfy low income housing needs and keep the project affordable, Sarasota County government was petitioned to reimburse Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County, Inc.  for the cost of land.  Designing and engineering infrastructure promptly started for the virgin land development.

After a year and a half of architectural and engineering designing, groundwork on the site began in late 2008. The first walls were raised with new environmental components called SIP panels. The panels were intended to create high energy efficient homes, resulting in low operating costs for our families. Unfortunately, Habitat had to go back to square one when the local company lost its funder.

We did not let this setback deter us from creating green townhouses.  With help from our energy advisors at CalcsPlus, we formulated a green design incorporating concrete blocks, spray foam insulation and various other green features.  The new design met Energy Star and Florida Green Home Builders Challenge criteria.

Six families are currently enjoying their new townhouses. Six additional townhouses are in various stages of construction, including our Women Build project. Local ladies will start on-site work on March 15, 2011
